The “No Coast”: a different history and different demographic

The APIA diaspora and resulting voices that have emerged in Minnesota make us one of the most unique places in the United States in terms of diversity, vibrancy, and contradiction. While past Summits were hosted in long-recognized strongholds of Asian Pacific Islander America, the Twin Cities offers an opportunity to expand APIA community and creative development. The 2000 U.S. Census reports that Minneapolis and St. Paul have the greatest concentration of Asian Americans in the interior of the United States. The Twin Cities now has the largest Hmong population in the world outside of Southeast Asia. Minnesota also has a particular history in Korean adoption resulting in a large and active adoptee community. The vast majority of the APIA population in Minnesota is youth.
